How did you become a professional hair and makeup artist and what do you love most about your job?
At the age of 15 I already knew that my dream job would be a makeup artist & hairstylist. Traveling the world, meeting new people almost every day, being creative and still fascinated by everything related to hair, makeup and beauty – and last but not least many magical moments on set. This has always been my inspiration and still is, even after many years in the industry. ALL of this is exactly why i am still crazy in love with what I do. And it gets better every year!
What is your favorite beauty tool on set?
Don´t get me started!! But seriously.. The most important tool for me is a good lamp or lighting. I can´t live without it so I always carry „My Beauty Light“ with me which is the perfect lighting, even at 4am on location somewhere in the desert. It does it´s magic!
My favorite beauty products on set are: Bioderma Sensibio H2O, Dior Nude Air, Rouge Dior Matte Lipstick 999, Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel, St. Barth Vanilla Body Lotion, Jurlique Jasmine Handcreme & Lavender Hydrating Mist, Tom Ford Pink Dusk Lipstick & Skin Illumination Duo Powder in Moonlight, Dior Hydra Life BB Cream, Crème de la Mer Lipbalm & The Moisturizing Soft Creme & The Revitalizing Hydrating Serum, Alpha-H Liquid Gold, May Lindstrom The Problem Solver, Tata Harper Boosted Contouring Serum, Dior Addict Lip Glow Pomade – I told you, don´t get me started on beauty products, I am a beauty fanatic!
What does your daily beauty routine look like, is there anything you can’t live without?
I always wash my face with a gentle cleanser. Then i splash cold water on my face for three times which stimulates the blood circulation and refines the skin. After that I always use a tonic, a serum and my morning or night cream.
For many many years I have been using Creme de la Mer Moisturizing Soft Creme – I know that sounds a little posh but it is definitely worth it. Just recently I discovered the Hydra Life Line from Dior and I am totally excited about it. Once a week I use a sheet mask, I love the ones from Missha, their Oxygen Peel is amazing as well. Another insider tipp is the Alpha-H Overnight Peel – sensational! I am just crazy for beauty products! Furthermore, as I am a working mum with a 1-year old little daughter, I really need the best products for a fresh look!
What do you consider the best moment of your career so far or what achievement are you especially proud of?
I guess there is not that „one moment“ in my career. It would be way to simple to reduce it to one moment. It´s like being in love. There are many amazing moments. And it is not about me, it is always about the people I share my journey with.
However, when you work in the desert outside L.A. at a location where Beyoncé and Lady Gaga already shot their music videos and you work with a great team that feels like a second family for about 2 weeks – that would be a highlight. Or that time we shot on the Barcardi Island in the Dominican Republic and the whole team just happened to act like Robinson Crusoe, eating bananas and fresh fish together with the only person living on the island – those moments are truly unforgettable.
Where do you get your inspiration for new beauty looks from?
I started traveling at a really young age. I lived in Sydney, Bondi Beach, for almost three years and visited over 97 cities in more than 29 countries. I stopped counting a while ago though. So my inspiration always comes from traveling. I find a lot of inspiration in nature, in exploring different cultures, or in reading an amazing travelbook.
I have a huge passion for interiors and design and I think fashion and aesthetics in gerneral go hand in hand with makeup and the love for beauty. Of course it also helps that the planet is so connected these days, I follow many blogs all over the world and it is very inspiring to see what´s out there.
How do you like to relax in your free time?
Whenever i get the chance to have a couple of days off my husband and I like to stay in small boutique hotels with good spa treatments and even more important – good food. I love to snuggle up in a soft bathrobe next to a fireplace with a good book and some red wine- that´s where you will find me! But hey – I forgot that I have a child now! So I guess you will rather find me at the baby pool now than in the spa!
Thank you very much Sabine for this amazing interview!
